The death of Mabentie Jabbie, an 18-year-old Xavier University student, has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of her family, friends, and educational community. A recent graduate of Ballou High School, Mabentie was just beginning her collegiate journey when her life ended in tragedy. Authorities have confirmed her passing as death by suicide.
Mabentie’s story began in Banjul, Gambia. She immigrated to the United States and spent her formative years in Alexandria, Virginia. From a young age, she carried with her a vibrant spirit and an unshakeable commitment to helping others. Her experiences shaped her into a young woman who was deeply empathetic, thoughtful, and driven by a desire to make a difference.
Her commitment to service was evident in her involvement with Urban Alliance, a national organization focused on connecting youth with work experience and mentorship. Since 2022, she had been actively involved in the program and was later placed at So Others Might Eat (SOME), a non-profit in Washington, D.C. There, she served as a Digital Navigator—helping people without internet access or tech skills navigate essential digital tools. Mabentie was particularly passionate about closing the digital gap for underserved communities.
Her impact was profound. Coworkers remember her as someone who took the time to listen, to offer help, and to inspire hope. At Ballou High School, she had been a model student—known for her academic drive and her deep involvement in community-focused projects. Her transition to Xavier was full of promise, and she quickly became known for her eagerness to learn and connect.
In the wake of her passing, those who knew her are gathering to honor her memory. Students and staff at Xavier University are holding vigils and offering support to one another as they try to process the loss. Urban Alliance has pledged to celebrate her legacy through continued work in her name, and SOME has expressed deep sorrow over losing a team member so full of promise.
