The San Antonio veteran community is grieving after the loss of one of their own, Mark Miller, who died by suicide on April 8 at the Audie Murphy VA Medical Center. Mark, a former U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs serviceman, was known for his advocacy, integrity, and his quiet commitment to helping others.
Mark’s life was defined by service, first to his country, then to his community. After completing his military career, he became a reliable voice for fellow veterans navigating the often difficult road to recovery. He understood the weight many carried, because he carried it too.
Friends recall his unassuming nature, his willingness to listen, and his calm voice that reassured many during dark moments. But behind that voice were battles he rarely spoke about — battles that ultimately took their toll.
His choice to end his life at the VA hospital, a place he visited often for both treatment and support work, shocked and saddened those closest to him. A vigil held in his honor brought together a circle of brothers and sisters in arms, many of whom were touched by Mark’s strength, even in silence.
